Two-base team grabs Defender's Cup

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AETCNS) --  More than one dozen military soccer teams came to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, to compete in the fifth Alamo City Military Open Soccer Tournament for the Defender's Cup during the Presidents Day weekend.

A team put together with players from two Air Force bases won the cup after an exciting overtime duel.

Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., and McChord AFB, Wash., united to beat Hurlburt Field, Fla., 3-2 in the final match of the tournament Sunday at the Defense Language Institute soccer field.

"A lot of hard work led to our victory," said Steve Robertson from the Davis Monthan/McChord combo.

Both teams were even at one goal during the first half. Neither team scored during the second half until Tyler Brock stepped up for Davis-Monthan/McChord and kicked a goal.

After Brock scored, Davis-Monthan/McChord put up a strong defense against Hurlburt.

However, with less than one minute left to play, Hurlburt Field got a corner kick, and Daniele Bruno slammed the ball into the net to tie the score at two and send the match into overtime.

The score remained deadlocked after the first 10-minute overtime session.

Then, a shot by Dan Walsh during the last two minutes of the second overtime broke the tie and gave Davis-Monthan/McChord the win.

"It felt great," Walsh said. "I haven't won in overtime in many years. There are four or five of us who have been playing together off and on, but this has been the first week when we've all played together."

Also during the tournament, Fort Sam Houston and Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., tied for third place.
