Units could win money through recycling program

SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  What could your group do with $1,000? Do your part to recycle, and you may find out.

"There is a $1,000 award for the winners of each quarter," said Michael Pettibon, DS2 hazardous waste program manager.

The purpose of this program is to encourage participation in the recycling program among all of the units on Sheppard AFB.

Besides being required by Executive Order to reduce the amount of solid waste sent to landfills, Sheppard AFB wants to be good neighbors to the local area.

"Sheppard Air Force Base is an active part of our community," Mr. Pettibon said. "By recycling our waste, we are being good neighbors to the Wichita Falls community and ensuring the quality of life for future generations."

To become eligible for the $1,000 cash award, place recycled materials at designated spots on the days the recycling center picks up materials. Call the facility manager to find out the location of the drop-off area. The facility manager can also explain what material is approved for recycling and what is not.

When recyclables are collected, the weight is calculated by the group recycling monitor who keeps a record of the amount that is recycled. The monitor then forwards the information to DS2.

"The group recycling monitor keeps track of the amounts they generate and reports their weights to the Environmental Flight on a monthly basis," Mr. Pettibon said.

Small groups have as much of a chance to win as large groups because winners are determined on a "per capita" basis.

"Winners are chosen based on the weight reported by each group and the group's population," Mr. Pettibon said. "This is then used to calculate a per capita weight for each group."

The highest per capita weights for permanent party groups and student groups win the award.

Use of the winning funds is determined by the unit commander. They may be used for anything from a group party to investing in the group recycling program.

Third quarter winners included the 82nd MSG (permanent party) and the 80th FTW student squadrons.
