Fitting tribute: PJs honored together

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  It was fitting two decorated pararescuemen were recognized together in an awards ceremony at Forbes Hall Monday.

Staff Sgts. John Hatzidakis and Christopher Nilson are pararescue instructors with the 342nd Training Squadron.

They joined the Air Force at about the same time in 2002, went through pararescue training together, and served on the same team from the 129th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron during a 2009 deployment to Afghanistan.

The two PJs were given multiple honors for their actions during that deployment.

Sergeant Hatzidakis received the Distinguished Flying Cross with valor and an Air Medal, while Sergeant Nilson was awarded an Air Medal with valor for heroism.

Lt. Gen. Douglas Owens, Air Education and Training Command vice commander, said it was no coincidence the two pararescuemen were assigned together as instructors.

General Owens, who presented the medals in front of an audience that included pararescue trainees, said, "They have been through a great deal together and it is by no small design that they are here today as part of this instructor cadre.

"These are two terrific examples of what the Air Force can do, and does do, every day in terms of producing Airmen who can do it all," he added.

Air Medals are awarded to military members or civilian personnel who perform in combat, single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements, while participating in an aerial flight.

General Owens said the honorees were the two most uncomfortable people in the auditorium.

"I am sure they would much prefer to have the decorations sent to them in the mail, put them on their service dress, and then go about their business of training all of you," he said. "I'm honored to pin these medals you've earned in great fashion."
