A leader, an inspiration and a help to others were just a handful of adjectives used by family members and former military comrades to describe Tech. Sgt. Maurice Britt during a dedication ceremony Monday.

Britt, who was assigned to the 37th Mission Support Group at the time of his death, was killed in a motorcycle accident April 5, 2009.

He was honored posthumously when the 802nd Force Support Squadron dedicated the squadron's Room 136 to his memory.

Britt and his wife, Audra, also a technical sergeant at Lackland, were part of a motorcycle group on its way back to Lackland from a rally in Austin.

Britt was driving his bike and Audra was riding on the back when a drunk driver swerved his SUV over multiple lanes of traffic, bounced off a car and plowed into the group.

The riders were wearing full protective gear, but the impact was devastating. Britt was killed instantly, and his wife died less than a week later.

In attendance were Britt's son, Nathaniel, and daughter, Dania, his mother-in-law, Carol Lee, and Audra's brother, Staff Sgt. Aron Lee, who is currently assigned to Lackland's 737th Training Group.

Dania described her father as a caring man. "He took care of his business, and he was just a loving person," she said.

"He was someone who would help cut people's grass."

He was also "strong and compassionate," his mother-in-law said. "He was sincere in everything that he did, and he always did it from the heart."

"This is truly awesome," Audra's brother said of his brother-in-law's posthumous recognition. "This doesn't happen every day; it just shows the impact he had on everybody he met.

"The family has been at peace for a while. I hope this ceremony brought closure for the Air Force family," he added.
