Keesler announces voluntary evacuation Published Aug. 28, 2012 81st Training Wing Public Affiars office KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- The base commander is recommending a voluntary evacuation of all military dependents (on and off base) attached to or assigned to Keesler AFB. If dependents depart in advance of the Commander's mandatory evacuation order, dependents will not receive entitlements for any expenses incurred. If the Commander issues an order, then entitlements will begin from that point forward. A voluntary evacuation should be considered to alleviate travel congestion. If the Commander issues a mandatory evacuation, the authorized evacuation range will be 150 to 700 miles. Consider this in your planning. Otherwise, dependents are encouraged to seek shelter at their local shelters. If families have not already arranged to shelter pets off base, then families must evacuate with pets. There is no pet shelter capability on base. Do not leave pets unattended in base housing. shelter information can be found here. Residents are encouraged to inventory and take photographs and/or video recordings of their personal property. This will facilitate any potential claims you may have to make via your private insurance or a government claim (after you have filed with your private insurance). Mississippi Power will cut power when the winds exceed 50kts Base housing residents: Forest City is asking for your assistance in the use of "evacuation cards." They are distributing these cards to every home. In the event of an emergency, and subsequent base evacuation, this card will indicate to the appropriate authorities that you and your family have safely evacuated your home or need assistance in the event of an emergency. If you are asked to evacuate your home, the GREEN "E" side of the card should be displayed (taped) to the front window where it is most visible. This will indicate to the appropriate authorities that you have safely evacuated your home. If your require help or assistance, the RED "H" side of the card should be displayed (taped) to your most visible front window so assistance can be rendered as soon as possible. By using this card you will help us achieve the most expedient, safe evacuation from housing, if an emergency should occur, and help ensure that if you do require assistance, you will get the help you need as quickly as possible.
