Columbus Air Force Base celebrated the 67th birthday of the Air Force Sept. 5 at the Mallory Hangar on Columbus AFB. The ball took place during Heritage week, which also celebrated the 14th Flying Training Wings Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training class 14-14 graduation and included a wing commander's reunion. The ball included a performance from a Junior ROTC and a speech from Guest Speaker Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson, Air Force Global Strike Command, Barksdale Air Force Base. The Air Force Birthday Ball has been a tradition for over 70 years, originating with the Army Air Corps. It started during World War II and has remained a popular social highlight every year. Now the ball is held at bases all over the world annually to celebrate the Air Force's birthday on Sept. 18.
