EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The command staff from Air Education and Training Command and 19th Air Force visited the 33rd Fighter Wing here, Oct. 2-4, 2017.
During the trip, both groups met with Airmen and leadership from across the wing to discuss recent successes, challenges and ways to overcome those challenges in the future.
“I wanted to spend time to focus with you, our leaders, on common topics we are facing across AETC,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, commander of AETC. “We are asking you to take a strategic look at where we really need to be, then backing up to see where we are now and what we have to do to reach our goals.”
During a senior leadership all-call Roberson lauded the Nomads progress with the F-35 program throughout the wing’s expansion in recent years.
Roberson added that the 33 FW has been prosperous as a part of AETC, and should continue to strive for improvement through the use of leadership, not management.
Chief Master Sgt. Juliet Gudgel, the new AETC command chief took the opportunity to introduce herself to the group and discuss the role that leaders should take to promote change at every level.
“Innovative ideas can come from anywhere,” Gudgel said, urging commanders and leaders to “create an environment where we can foster that innovation, and (Airmen) will come forward with those great ideas. It’s time to think outside of the box. Help us move forward and don’t be afraid of change. Help us change the status quo so that we can make a difference for the Airmen who come after us.”
Earlier in the week Maj. Gen. Patrick Doherty, 19th AF commander, and Chief Master Sgt. David Brown, 19th AF command chief, toured the wing during their first site visit since assuming their positions.
Doherty and Brown visited Airmen at their work centers across the wing to familiarize themselves with all aspects of the mission. Their interaction with Airmen helps bridge the gap between the tactical and strategic levels of operations, ensuring everyone is oriented to a common goal.
"It's important for our Airmen to know who our leaders are, hear guidance directly from them, and understand their vision and where we are going as an Air Force," said Chief Master Sgt. Yasmeen Wilson, 33rd FW Command Chief. "It gives everyone a clearer understanding of why we do what we do, and how each person impacts the bigger mission of AETC and the Air Force as a whole. It also lets them know that their hard work is seen by our leaders and appreciated."
